DCMH Athlete of the Week: Drake Scaggs

Updated: Jan 8

Tied a longstanding school record to lead team to victory

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A South Decatur junior is leading his team by example and his efforts have earned him the nomination for DCMH Athlete of the Week

Drake Scaggs is one of the few upperclassmen on a young team that started off the season slow.

The Cougars were 0-7 but things took a major change after a game on December 28.

They were double-digit underdogs coming into the game against Austin during the Edinburgh Holiday Tournament on December 28.

Scaggs not only led the Cougars to a win, he also tied the school’s single-game assist record with 15. The record has stood since 1990.

Ever since then, Scaggs and the Cougars have went 3-0 as he is also averaging 16 points per game.

His head coach, Josh Terwilleger, says Scaggs is leading the team by being selfless on the court.

“Drake has had a great start to the year being close to a triple double a few times. He’s not your typical point guard, but he leads by example. When your point guard is averaging 10 rebounds a game, it’s hard for other players to not want to do more,” Terwilleger said.

Scaggs points to the Austin game as a turning point in the season where it showed the young team that they are good enough to compete against anyone.

As for being a leader on the team, Scaggs credits former Cougar stars like Jacob Scruggs and Hunter Johnson for showing him how to lead a team.

We also spoke with Scaggs who had a lot to say about the first-year Head Coach Josh Terwilleger.

“He’s honestly one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I’ve been around him quite a bit since he came here, and I have never heard him say anything negative, or say something bad about anyone,” Scaggs said.

Drake has dreams of playing basketball in college and one school that he would love to receive an offer from is Taylor University, where his cousin, North Decatur senior Madi Allen, recently committed to play women’s basketball.

Scaggs and the Cougars will be back in action against Edinburgh on January 11.
