FCN Student of the Week: Eva Lou Powaga

Has just accomplished a major reading milestone!

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – A South Ripley sixth grader has achieved an incredible milestone when it comes to reading.

Eva Lou Powaga has read 4 million words this school year!

She has read 52 books since August and they have ranged from ‘Little Women’ to ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and ‘My Secret War: The World War II Diary of Madeline Beck.’

“My mom read to me when I was little, and she has always had high expectations for me,” Eva Lou said.

Her teacher, Lisa Gilpin, says Eva Lou immerses herself in stories to grow her knowledge and imagination.

Eva Lou is far from finished as her new goal is to read 5 million words this year.

South Ripley Elementary celebrated her success by hosting an “Eva Lou Day” on Monday where sixth graders wore her favorite color, orange, and had her favorite snack, Honey BBQ Chips!
