Franklin Co. Prosecutor discusses trial that led to conviction of man who shot wife, deputy

(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – Franklin County Prosecutor Chris Huerkamp is praising local law enforcement and thanking jury members after a trial this past week.

33-year-old Gregory Guilfoyle was found “Guilty But Mentally Ill” on eight charges including two for Attempted Murder.

Guilfoyle was convicted of shooting his wife and then later engaging in a gunfight with a Franklin County deputy during a snowstorm in December of 2022.

He shot his wife in the head and dragged her out into the cold where he “left her for dead,” Huerkamp said.

She survived the injuries and testified at trial.

That deputy who Guilfoyle exchanged gunfire with was unhurt but a bullet did strike his bulletproof vest.

Huerkamp is praising the deputy and other law enforcement officers who he calls bona fide heroes.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to serve in a position where I get to continue to work with these fine officers. Our community needs to know that we have such brave men keeping us all safe," he said.

Huerkamp also commended the contributions of Batesville Police Officers Ryan Metcalf & Hailey Brown, Franklin County EMS Advanced EMT Ashley O’Neal, and former Greenhills (Ohio) Police Chief Neil Ferdelman & Springfield Township Officer James Scheeler, who testified later in trial.

The prosecutor is also addressing the medical and psychological evidence that the jury heard over the six-day trial.

“We knew going into this trial that it would be an uphill battle on that issue, but we also thought there were some flaws in the conclusions, and we did our best to point those out during cross-examination and in closing argument," he said.

In a taped interview that was played at trial, Guilfoyle claimed that he was experiencing what he described as a break from reality at the time of the offenses.

Guilfoyle is now facing decades in prison when the sentencing hearing takes place on May 2.

The Prosecution was represented at trial by Prosecutor Huerkamp and Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Molly Brier, with ISP Detective Brent Miller also present at the prosecution table.

“There is no way I could have done this alone. Molly did a superb job in the courtroom this week. And I could not ask for a better investigating officer than Brent Miller--considering this case involved numerous unforeseen evolutions, especially once the insanity defense was raised. It was truly a team effort, and I’m very proud to have been a part of this team,” said Huerkamp. “But make no mistake—this case was not about us. This case was about the heroes who wear Franklin County Sheriff’s Department badges and the undeniable courage of the most amazing survivor I’ve ever met—Hannah.”

Finally, Huerkamp would also like to thank the jury for their service, attentiveness, and engagement through a grueling week of trial.
