Lawrenceburg fifth grader shoveling snow for good cause

Hoping more students join her or create their own cause

(GREENDALE, Ind.) — A Lawrenceburg student is hoping for many more snow days this winter.

10-year-old Adelaide Dunn has developed a business plan where she offers to snow shovel driveways in her Greendale neighborhood.

It started last year when she was playing in the snow and noticed a neighbor who was shoveling their driveway.

"I went over and asked if I could help and so I did, and when we finished he gave me money and I was thinking that I didn't really need the money," Adelaide said.

She told her mom, Kelly, about it who encouraged her to donate the money to a charity.

Adelaide's dad had cancer when he was a boy so it was an easy decision to pick the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati.

She shoveled a few more driveways last year and was able to donate $350 to the cause and also took a tour of the facility.

The Central Elementary fifth grader has decided to make it an annual business and she calls her company "Strong Workers for Strong People."

"I named it that because people who are going through an illness or hard times, they are stronger than us, because they get tore down and are able to build themselves back up," Adelaide said.

Her goal is to shovel driveways every winter until she goes to college, while giving all the proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House.

She is dedicated to the business as well. After finishing up her ELearning assignments last week, she went outside and shoveled snow, rather than sit inside and play on her tablet.

Dunn says one area of the business that she would like to expand is it's workforce.

"I want to get more kids to come and help me, it's hard to get to a lot of driveways and raise money when you are just one person," she said.

She hopes other students will join the cause where they can split up into the groups to conquer more driveways.

Adelaide encourages students in other communities to get outside and make a difference as well.

"Other kids could do this in their area, they can get their friends in their area to help out to and raise money for Ronald McDonald House or another charity," Dunn said.
