South Dearborn School Board votes to close Manchester

Vote took place Tuesday night

(AURORA, Ind.) -- The South Dearborn School Board has approved a recommendation to close Manchester Elementary.

The school board voted 6-1 in favor to close during the school board meeting at South Dearborn Middle School on Tuesday night.

Declining enrollment, building repairs and new state legislation has been listed as reasons why the school corporation considered the closure.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, several community members spoke out against closing the school.

The principals of Aurora Elementary, South Dearborn Middle School and Manchester Elementary also spoke and said they would support the consolidation.

The sole school board member that voted against the recommendation was Steve Hamlett.

Superintendent Ron Ross also addressed rumors of a possible closure of Dillsboro Elementary, which he said were not true.

The school board also approved changing the mascot name at South Dearborn Middle School from Squires to Knights.
